Transit the Panama Canal
An engineering marvel, the canal has reduced the continental
divide and drastically eased global commerce. With three sets of
locks, the 51-mile trek is an awe-inspiring testament to human
ingenuity. Constructed more than 90 years ago, the conduit
altered the geography of the Americas forever. Dams stopped the
rivers in their tracks. Valleys
became lakes, and mountains
islands. While sailing through the
most lush of tropical landscapes,
this day aboard the Symphony
will provide stunning vistas and
peaceful escape.
Sunday, January 13

Oranjestad, Aruba, Dutch West Indies
The town was built around Fort Zoutman shortly after it was
constructed in 1796 and Oranjestad has been the capital of
Aruba ever since. The charming port city is best explored on
foot. Its palm-lined central thoroughfare runs between old and
new pastel-painted buildings of typical Dutch style. Aruban
handicrafts abound at the dockside bazaar, where bargaining is
expected and dollars or florins are accepted. If you’re looking for
a little culture, Oranjestad
has a handful of museums
and houses of worship to
visit, many of which offer
free admission.

after being destroyed by fire
in 1867, the law still holds
that no building can be taller
than the surrounding palm
trees. On the southwestern
shore of St. Kitts, Basseterre is
one of the oldest and most
scenic capitals in the Caribbean. The historic district has
attractive examples of Creole and West Indian architecture, and
the island’s most popular historical attraction, Brimstone Hall
fortress, is mere minutes from the port.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan is steeped in Old Spanish
tradition. Old San Juan, the
original city was founded in
1521 and contains well-preserved
examples of 16th and
17th-century Spanish colonial
architecture, highlighted by the
famous El Morro fort. Many of the narrow streets are paved with
adequines, the ballast stones from Spanish galleons. It is easy to
see why this whole area is a National Historic Zone.
